Hormone Quiz 7: Thyroid

The Gajer Practice Blogs

February 29, 2024

Today we are hitting the last stop on our hormone quiz journey by examining the thyroid.  The thyroid is the most frequently checked hormone on regular physicals but there is some nuance to the testing and interpretation of results.  One’s TSH may appear normal, but other tests can point to subtle dysfunction that still needs to be addressed.

The following quiz can help you determine if your thyroid function may be suboptimal.  Again, this has been adapted from Sara Gottfried’s book the Hormone Cure.

Do you have or have you experienced in the past 6 months:

  1. Hair loss, including eyebrows or eyelashes?
  2. Dry skin?
  3. Dry, straw like hair?
  4. Thin, brittle fingernails?
  5. Fluid retention or swollen ankles?
  6. Extra weight that is hard to lose?
  7. Constipation?
  8. Cold or heat intolerance?
  9. Slow heartrate?
  10. Morning fatigue?
  11. Difficulty concentrating?
  12. Low sex drive?
  13. Depression or moodiness?

If you said yes to 5 or more of these questions, you likely have a thyroid problem.  If you said yes to 3-5, it is worth it to get your thyroid checked.

The Science of Aging: What We Know and What We Can Do About It

Nobody thinks about their muscle until it's gone. That's the honest truth. Most of my patients come to me focused on fat — how to lose it, where it's coming from, why it won't budge. And fat matters, absolutely. But underneath that conversation is one I think is even more important, especially as we age.
