What is Andropause?

Most of us are familiar with the term menopause, but less people are aware of the changes men go through as they age. Andropause, also known as male menopause or late-onset hypogonadism, refers to the natural age-related decline in testosterone levels in men. While it is not as well-known or as clearly defined as menopause in women, andropause is a significant hormonal change that occurs in men typically between the ages of 40 and 60.

During andropause, the production of testosterone, the primary male hormone, gradually decreases. Testosterone plays a vital role in various bodily functions, including sexual health, muscle mass maintenance, bone density regulation, cognitive function, mood regulation, and overall well-being. As testosterone levels decline, men may experience a range of physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms.

Symptoms of andropause can vary among individuals but may include:

  • Fatigue and decreased energy levels.
  • Reduced sexual drive and libido.
  • Erectile dysfunction or difficulties achieving and maintaining erections.
  • Loss of muscle mass and strength.
  • Increased body fat, especially around the abdomen.
  • Mood changes, such as irritability, depression, or decreased motivation.
  • Memory problems and decreased cognitive function.
  • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or increased sleepiness.

As life expectancy for our society has increased, people have become increasingly more interested in maintaining the best quality of life at any age. Although the decrease in testosterone is normal with age, we now have safe tools to address this decline and help men continue to live full and vital lives. Bioidentical hormone treatment aims to improve overall quality of life rather than treat a lab value. There are also multiple studies that demonstrate that testosterone replacement improves quality of life, increases longevity and protects against cardiovascular disease.

Men who are trying to conceive and men who have had prostate cancer should not use testosterone. Schedule a pre-screen call with us today to determine if hormone optimization may be right for you.

Dear readers, Most women I see in clinic for perimenopause have been told, somewhere along the way, that what they are feeling is "just stress," "just aging," or "just life." Many have been told they are "too young".

The Science of Aging: What We Know and What We Can Do About It

Nobody thinks about their muscle until it's gone. That's the honest truth. Most of my patients come to me focused on fat — how to lose it, where it's coming from, why it won't budge. And fat matters, absolutely. But underneath that conversation is one I think is even more important, especially as we age.
