The health of our metabolism determines what happens to food after it enters our bodies. Does it get stored as fat or is it efficiently used as energy?  Insulin plays a key role in this equation.

What’s Insulin Sensitivity and Resistance?

Think of insulin as a key that unlocks the door for sugar to enter our cells and give us energy. When our cells listen well to insulin, we say they’re sensitive. But when they start ignoring insulin’s messages, that’s called resistance.

Why Does It Matter?

Excess body fat, genetic predisposition, and lack of exercise can all cause insulin resistance.  Insulin isn’t just about sugar – it also affects how our bodies store fat. When cells don’t respond to insulin, our bodies make more of it. And guess what? That extra insulin tells our bodies to store more fat, especially around our bellies.

How to Check Your Insulin Sensitivity

There’s a simple test called the fasting insulin test. It checks how much insulin you have in your blood after not eating for a while. If it’s low, that’s good – it means your cells are listening well. But if it’s high, it could be a sign of insulin resistance.

Easy Lifestyle Tips to Improve Insulin Sensitivity

Now, let’s talk about what you can do to make your cells more sensitive to insulin:

1. Eat Well: Choose whole foods like veggies, fruits, lean meats, and whole grains. Skip the processed stuff as much as you can. A diet high in fiber from vegetables and beans can improve insulin sensitivity.

2. Move More: Get active! Even a little exercise each day – like walking or dancing – can make a big difference in how your body uses insulin.

3. Chill Out: Stress messes with our hormones, including insulin. Find ways to relax, like deep breathing, meditation, or simply taking time for yourself.

4. Get Your Beauty Rest: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Good sleep helps your body regulate insulin better.
