The Thyroid – Weight Relationship

Hello, Dear Friends and Valued Patients,

In our journey towards a healthier, happier life, we’ve often discussed the various factors that can impede weight loss progress. Many times, these obstacles extend beyond diet and exercise and involve complex issues like nutritional imbalances, inflammation, gut health, genetics, and environmental toxins. Today, I want to shine a spotlight on a significant yet often overlooked hurdle in the quest for weight loss: thyroid hormone imbalances.

It’s no secret that hormones play a pivotal role in our overall health, and when it comes to weight management, they are undeniable influencers. While excess insulin often takes center stage as the “monster hormone” responsible for weight gain, inflammation, and chronic diseases, it’s important to acknowledge that other hormones also wield considerable power over our weight and well-being.

Today we will focus on thyroid imbalance and how addressing these imbalances can be a game-changer in your weight loss journey.

Thyroid Matters:

Research reveals that hypothyroidism, or low thyroid function, affects a significant portion of the population. Astonishingly, more than half of these cases often go undiagnosed, leaving individuals struggling with unexplained weight issues.

Several factors contribute to these imbalances, including dietary choices, nutrient deficiencies, stress, and exposure to environmental toxins. For instance, gluten intolerance is a common trigger for hypothyroidism, as are pesticides and heavy metals. Your thyroid requires specific nutrients like selenium, zinc, iodine, and omega-3 fats to function optimally.

Unfortunately, many healthcare providers fail to accurately test and effectively treat thyroid issues. Yet, thyroid function is undeniably linked to maintaining a healthy weight, making it a crucial aspect of overcoming weight-loss resistance.

Here are four strategies that I’ve found effective in optimizing thyroid function and aiding weight loss:

  1. Get the Right Tests: Ask your doctor for a comprehensive thyroid panel, including thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free T3 and T4, as well as thyroid antibodies. Some may even benefit from a specialized test called reverse T3 to uncover potential blockages in thyroid function.
  2. Eat Right for Your Thyroid: While cruciferous vegetables are typically recommended for their health benefits, those with thyroid issues should limit their consumption, especially in their raw form. Ensure a diet rich in iodine, selenium, and zinc by incorporating foods like wild-caught fish, seaweed, pumpkin seeds, and oysters.
  3. Supplements for Thyroid Health: Consider a quality multivitamin containing essential nutrients for thyroid health, alongside fish oil and vitamin D. Some individuals may benefit from iodine supplements, but it’s crucial to monitor iodine levels regularly to avoid overdosing.
  4. Choose the Right Thyroid Hormones: Instead of relying solely on T4 hormones like Synthroid, explore bioidentical hormones such as Armour, Westhroid, or Nature Thyroid, or a combination of T4 and T3.

While weight-loss resistance can stem from various sources, addressing hormonal imbalances can be a potent catalyst for change. If you suspect that hormonal issues are impacting your weight management efforts, I encourage you to take the next step by scheduling a hormone assessment appointment with me at The Gajer Practice. Together, we can pave the way to a healthier, happier you.

Your journey to a balanced and vibrant life begins with understanding and addressing these essential hormonal factors. Don’t wait—take action today!

6 Signs That Perimenopause Is Here

Dear readers, Most women I see in clinic for perimenopause have been told, somewhere along the way, that what they are feeling is "just stress," "just aging," or "just life." Many have been told they are "too young".

The Science of Aging: What We Know and What We Can Do About It

Nobody thinks about their muscle until it's gone. That's the honest truth. Most of my patients come to me focused on fat — how to lose it, where it's coming from, why it won't budge. And fat matters, absolutely. But underneath that conversation is one I think is even more important, especially as we age.
