Why Can’t I Lose Weight? Part 1

You’re eating healthy. You exercise regularly. You rarely snack, carbs are an extremely rare treat. But the scale isn’t moving. Maybe you lose 0.5lbs every 2-3 weeks. What’s going on?

There is much more to weight management than calories in/ calories out. There are factors that highly influence the metabolism that are often underappreciated. We will discuss a few of them here and some tips on how to jump start a stalled out metabolism.

  1. Stress- Are we talking about this again? Unfortunately, yes we are. Stress is in some ways inevitable, but science shows that techniques exist to counteract its impact on our physiology. Meditation, breathwork, yoga, journaling, massage and various other calming activities can activate our parasympathetic nervous system and counteract excessive stress.
  2. Sleep- Adequate sleep is crucial for a healthy metabolism. Our bodies require sleep to maintain normal cellular metabolism. Additionally, the mental energy required to make healthy choices is often unavailable when sleep is disrupted. To improve sleep, avoid caffeine after 12pm, eliminate screens 1 hour before bed, and go to bed and wake up within an hour of the same time each day and morning.
  3. Metabolism disrupting chemicals- Research has recently described a class of chemicals characterized as obesogens. Obesogens are metabolism disrupting chemicals that directly increase fat mass. They are unfortunately present in processed foods as well as food containers and industry lobbies fiercely to use these in all aspects of life. The best way to avoid these is to opt for whole foods when possible and avoid food in plastic, especially when the plastic is heated in the process of making the food.
