Autoimmunity is a physiological process that occurs when our immune system misidentifies one of our organ systems as foreign and launches an attack, impairing its proper functioning. Recent studies report a significant increase in autoimmune diseases, particularly in industrialized nations.
Common autoimmune conditions include hashimoto’s thyroiditis (a leading cause of hypothyroidism in the US), crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and psoriasis. Our prevailing medical approach involves suppressing the overactive immune system and, in some cases, replenishing the hormones secreted by the targeted organs (thyroid hormones and insulin for diabetes). The question arises: what underlies the substantial increase in these conditions? Has our immune system lost its inherent ability to distinguish self from foreign substances?
The answer appears rooted in our environment. There is generally a trigger that causes our immune system to turn on ourselves, but these are often hard to find therefore rarely explored.
Infections stand out as primary insults that can befuddle the immune system. Various infections, including tick-borne illnesses, CMV or Epstein-Barr virus, and H. pylori, can induce confusion in our bodies. Exploring hidden infections may prove instrumental in reversing the course of autoimmunity.
Food sensitivity emerges as another potential trigger. Highly processed foods can incite an inflammatory response, prompting the body to launch self-attacks. Food sensitivity testing can elucidate one’s particular triggers.
Environmental toxins play a significant role in immune system confusion. The US Environmental Protection Agency reports an alarming annual death toll of 9 million due to environmental toxins. Plastics, in direct contact with a substantial portion of our food supply, release chemicals that leach into our foods, severely disrupting immune systems. Opting for glass containers, regular air filter changes, and air purifiers can contribute to detoxifying the environment.
Other potential triggers for autoimmunity include micronutrient deficiency, dysbiosis (an imbalance in gut bacteria), and an inadequate exposure to sunlight coupled with excessive exposure to blue light.
